Survivor 51 Episode 2 Preview: What CBS Teased, Who's in Trouble, and Your Last Sole Survivor Call

Where Episode 1 left the board

The premiere gave us one boot and a lot of information. Toka went to the first Tribal Council of the season and voted out Aaliyah 6–2, after both she and Jenna gave up their votes to play a Shot in the Dark and both drew "not safe." Brady, Kilby, Maggie, Mike, Patt and Thien An wrote Aaliyah; Devin and Jelly wrote Jenna. Lewis was on Exile Island and did not vote. Here is how the two tribes stand going into Episode 2:

What the preview shows

CBS's pitch for Episode 2, titled "Weaponized Honesty," hits three notes: an injury at camp that "threatens to send one player home," an immunity challenge at sea where one tribe struggles to stay afloat, and a Tribal Council where one player tries a never-before-seen move to save an ally.

The injury in the preview is Brady cutting his hand with a machete at camp. Some recap sites are already asking whether it ends his game. No medical evacuation has been confirmed, and preview coverage shows him still competing in the challenge that follows. Nothing CBS has released says he leaves, and previews are cut to make you ask exactly that question. Brady was also the one who threw himself at the crate section of the premiere challenge, so he is already a player the edit likes to follow.

"Never-before-seen" is a big claim for a franchise entering its 51st season, and "to save an ally" narrows it: whatever the move is, the player making it is not the one in danger. Who is vulnerable

On Toka, Jenna is the obvious name. Devin said at Tribal that he was writing her name "no matter what," and she used her vote on a Shot in the Dark, which tells you she knew she was in trouble. She survived because the numbers went to Aaliyah, not because the target moved. If Toka loses again, she starts the night as the name to beat.

On Savu, nobody has had to vote yet. That makes this tribe the harder read. It also makes it more dangerous for anyone who assumes the first Savu Tribal will be tidy. One person over there knows they are safe through the final five, because Rob found an idol with no strings on it. If his tribe works out that he has it, the vote will run around him, and whoever is next closest to the middle takes the hit.

Your Sole Survivor locks at airtime

This is the most important line in this preview for anyone playing fantasy. Every Sole Survivor choice locks when Episode 2 airs. Your Sole Survivor scores double on every point they gain for the rest of the season, and losses count once. Until 8/7c on Wednesday you can still move the crown from your first pick to anyone on your roster. After that it is fixed.

Three questions to ask before you lock it in:

1. Is my current pick on the tribe that just lost? A Toka castaway goes into Episode 2 with a live chance of a second Tribal. A Savu castaway has a cushion.
2. Who is getting screen time? Devin led the premiere in confessionals. Players the edit follows early are usually the ones with a story still to tell.
3. Who has a safety net? An idol with no conditions attached is the best safety net in the game, and one castaway already has one.
