CBS's Survivor has turned two tribes into three at least seven times before Survivor 51, starting with Cambodia in 2015. The swap minority is supposed to be doomed, but at the first Tribal after those seven swaps it went home only once. The other six boots came from the bigger side, usually because their own former tribemates turned on them, which is exactly how Survivor 51's first post-swap vote went.

What Survivor 51 did

In Episode 4, Survivor 51 turned two tribes into three. Toka and Savu became Toka (6), Dina (6) and Savu (5), and Dina's pink buffs were brand new. Reddit hated it, mostly because it broke up alliances that had just started to mean something. The twists page has the full line-up, and the current tribes page shows where everyone is now.

It is not a new idea. By our count it is at least the eighth time the show has gone from two tribes to three. Cambodia did it first, in 2015.

Every two-into-three swap, and the first boot after

Cambodia (31)3Three tribes of 6Peih-Gee, 4–2No
Millennials vs. Gen X (33)55, 5 and 6CeCe, 4–1No. Her own Gen X allies flipped.
Game Changers (34)2Three tribes of 6Caleb, 5–1Yes. Two original Mana against four Nuku.
David vs. Goliath (37)4Three tribes of 5NataliaNo. A fellow Goliath flipped.
Edge of Extinction (38)4Three tribes of 5Rick Devens, 3–2Not possible: his new tribe was all original Manu.
Winners at War (40)5Three tribes of 5Boston Rob, 4–1No. His own old tribemates turned on him.
Survivor 496Three tribes of 4Shannon, 3–1No. Three original Uli against one Hina.

One in seven. The textbook swap boot, where the outnumbered pair gets picked off, happened once. Much more often the swap gave someone in the majority a reason to cut a former tribemate while there was no tribe line to defend.

Survivor 51 followed the pattern

The new Savu was three original Tokas (Devin, Jelly and Jenna) and two original Savus (Ori and Alexis). That made the Savus the minority, and the Tokas should have been safe. Instead, Devin and Jelly joined Ori and Alexis to blindside Jenna 4–1. Our Episode 4 recap has the vote.

Episode 5 went the same way at Dina. The four original Savus had a 4–2 majority, and one of them, Linnea, went home after Maggie's Extra Votes forced two ties. The Linnea breakdown walks through it. Only Alexis, voted out 3–1 by Savu in Episode 5, fits the minority-goes-first script.

Why fans don't like it

A three-tribe swap does two things a reshuffle into two does not:

  • It makes tribes smaller. Smaller tribes lose people faster, and one more loss can leave a tribe of three, which is where Savu is now.
  • It strands pairs. With three tribes, an alliance of four usually ends up spread across all three, so nobody has enough numbers to protect anyone.

That is the case against it. The case for it is that it breaks a dominant tribe before the merge, and that the merge usually follows quickly: across the seven earlier seasons, the median gap from swap to merge was three episodes.

Speculation

Survivor 51 swapped in Episode 4. If it follows the median, the merge comes around Episode 7. Survivor 49's second swap held for one episode; Game Changers swapped again after three.

How the new era has handled swaps

Seasons 41 to 50 mostly avoided full reshuffles. Survivor 41, 42, 46 and 47 had no tribe swap at all. Survivor 45 and 48 reshuffled three tribes into three, Survivor 44 moved one player from each tribe, and Survivor 49 went from three tribes to two and then to three again. All ten started with three tribes; Survivor 51 is the first of the era to start with two. All of them are in our Survivor history hub.

Your vote

How should Survivor swap? We are asking readers on the predictions page: two into three like Survivor 51, a reshuffle that keeps the same number of tribes, no swap at all, or something different every season.

Quick answers

Has Survivor swapped from two tribes to three before?
Yes. Before Survivor 51 it happened at least seven times: Cambodia, Millennials vs. Gen X, Game Changers, David vs. Goliath, Edge of Extinction, Winners at War and Survivor 49.
Does the minority go home first after a Survivor tribe swap?
Less often than you would think. After the seven earlier two-into-three swaps, the swap minority was voted out at the first Tribal only once, in Game Changers. The other six boots came from the larger original-tribe group on the new tribe.
