Every All-First-Timer Survivor Season, Ranked

How we ranked them

Thirty-five of Survivor's first fifty seasons were played entirely by people who had never been on the show before. That leaves out the returnee seasons, the Fans vs. Favorites seasons and the seasons that seeded a few returning players into a new cast, including Survivor 45, which brought back one player from the season before.

The ranking is ours, and it is opinion: a mix of cast, story, strategy and how well the season holds up on a rewatch. The facts attached to each season, the winner, the final vote and what made the format different, come from our season-by-season history, which is built from each season's public record.

The all-time greats

Seasons we would hand to anyone who has never seen the show.

1. Survivor: Cagayan (Season 28, 2014)

The gold standard for a first-timer season. Every tribe had a player worth watching, and its winner played the most aggressive game of the era and was rewarded for it. Divided the cast into Brains, Brawn and Beauty tribes. Winner: Tony Vlachos, 8–1.

2. Survivor: David vs. Goliath (Season 37, 2018)

Almost everyone in the cast had a story, and the underdog framing paid off week after week. It is the easiest recommendation on this list. Opened as the David tribe of underdogs against the Goliath tribe of overachievers, then switched on day ten into Vuku, Tiva and Jabeni. Winner: Nick Wilson, 7–3–0.

3. Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X (Season 33, 2016)

A deep cast of big-move players, with something happening at almost every Tribal Council. Split the cast by generation, and began the show's permanent residency in Fiji. Winner: Adam Klein, 10–0–0.

4. Survivor: Pearl Islands (Season 7, 2003)

Pirate-flavoured chaos from start to finish, and the first win for the player who went on to become the show's first two-time champion. The Outcasts twist returned already-eliminated castaways to the game. Winner: Sandra Diaz-Twine, 6–1.

5. Survivor: Borneo (Season 1, 2000)

Nobody knew how to play yet, which is exactly why it still works. Everything the show became started here. The first season, and the one where a voting alliance was first used as a strategy rather than treated as cheating. Winner: Richard Hatch, 4–3.

6. Survivor: Palau (Season 10, 2005)

A lopsided season in the best way: one tribe could not stop losing, the other could not stop winning, and one player dominated the run to the end. Ulong lost every immunity challenge and was reduced to a single member, who attended Tribal Council alone. Winner: Tom Westman, 6–1.

7. Survivor: The Amazon (Season 6, 2003)

The men-versus-women split looked like a gimmick and turned into one of the show's best endgames. The first season to divide the starting tribes by gender — Jaburu against Tambaqui. Winner: Jenna Morasca, 6–1.

8. Survivor: Tocantins (Season 18, 2009)

A season built around one of the cleanest winning games the show has ever seen. Played in the Jalapão region of Brazil by Jalapao and Timbira, and settled by a unanimous jury vote. Winner: James "J.T." Thomas Jr., 7–0.

9. Survivor: China (Season 15, 2007)

The strangest setting the show has used, a cold and very un-tropical location, and a sharp strategic winner to match. Filmed entirely in China, at Mount Lu West Sea — the furthest north the show has ever gone, and well outside the tropics it usually sticks to. Winner: Todd Herzog, 4–2–1.

10. Survivor: Kaôh Rōng (Season 32, 2016)

A brutal, hot season full of big swings, and one of the most debated jury results of the modern era. The second Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty season, played by Chan Loh, Gondol and To Tang on Cambodia's Koh Rong. Winner: Michele Fitzgerald, 5–2–0.

Excellent

Close to the top tier, and usually one great storyline away from it.

11. Survivor: The Australian Outback (Season 2, 2001)

Ran 42 days rather than the standard 39, and remains the highest-rated season in the show's history. Winner: Tina Wesson, 4–3.

12. Survivor: Cook Islands (Season 13, 2006)

The first season to end with three finalists facing the jury rather than two. Winner: Yul Kwon, 5–4–0.

13. Survivor: Samoa (Season 19, 2009)

Foa Foa against Galu, and the season Russell Hantz turned finding hidden idols without clues into a repeatable play. Winner: Natalie White, 7–2–0.

14. Survivor 46 (Season 46, 2024)

Winner: Kenzie Petty, 5–3–0.

15. Survivor 47 (Season 47, 2024)

Winner: Rachel LaMont, 7–1–0.

16. Survivor 44 (Season 44, 2023)

Winner: Yamil "Yam Yam" Arocho, 7–1–0.

17. Survivor 48 (Season 48, 2025)

Included Eva Erickson, the first openly autistic person to compete on the show. Winner: Kyle Fraser, 5–2–1.

18. Survivor: Gabon (Season 17, 2008)

The show's second season in Africa, played in Gabon by Fang and Kota, with Exile Island still in the mix. Winner: Robert "Bob" Crowley, 4–3–0.

19. Survivor: Marquesas (Season 4, 2002)

Introduced the purple rock tiebreaker to a deadlocked vote. Winner: Vecepia Towery, 4–3.

20. Survivor 42 (Season 42, 2022)

Kept the hourglass from the season before and added Do or Die, which staked a player's place in the game on a gamble rather than a vote. Winner: Maryanne Oketch, 7–1–0.

Worth your time

Solid seasons with real highs, and a few rough patches.

21. Survivor: Africa (Season 3, 2001)

The show's first season in Africa, played across Kenya's Shaba National Reserve by the Boran and Samburu tribes. Winner: Ethan Zohn, 5–2.

22. Survivor: Vanuatu (Season 9, 2004)

The second season to split the starting tribes by gender, Yasur against Lopevi. Winner: Chris Daugherty, 5–2.

23. Survivor: Panama (Season 12, 2006)

Built around Exile Island, where a castaway was sent alone between challenges. Winner: Aras Baskauskas, 5–2.

24. Survivor: San Juan del Sur (Season 29, 2014)

A Blood vs. Water season played entirely by new castaways, pairs split across Coyopa and Hunahpu. Winner: Natalie Anderson, 5–2–1.

25. Survivor: Worlds Apart (Season 30, 2015)

Divided the cast by working life into White-Collar, Blue-Collar and No-Collar tribes — Escameca, Masaya and Nagarote. Winner: Mike Holloway, 6–1–1.

26. Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers (Season 35, 2017)

Divided eighteen new players into three tribes by a dominant perceived trait — Levu, Soko and Yawa. Winner: Ben Driebergen, 5–2–1.

27. Survivor: Ghost Island (Season 36, 2018)

Built around Ghost Island, which held advantages that players in previous seasons had misplayed, and sent them back into the game cursed. Winner: Wendell Holland, 5–5–0 (tiebreak).

28. Survivor 41 (Season 41, 2021)

Began the New Era at 26 days, and introduced the Shot in the Dark. Winner: Erika Casupanan, 7–1–0.

29. Survivor 43 (Season 43, 2022)

Won by Mike Gabler at 51, the second-oldest winner in the show's history, who pledged the prize to charity. Winner: Mike Gabler, 7–1–0.

30. Survivor 49 (Season 49, 2025)

Winner: Savannah Louie, 5–2–1.

For completists

Seasons with memorable moments that did not come together as a whole.

31. Survivor: Thailand (Season 5, 2002)

Opened by handing the two eldest castaways the power to choose the tribes themselves, schoolyard-style, on day one — Chuay Gahn and Sook Jai. Winner: Brian Heidik, 4–3.

32. Survivor: Fiji (Season 14, 2007)

Split the cast between a furnished camp and a bare one, Moto against Ravu, and ended in the first unanimous jury vote in the show's history. Winner: Earl Cole, 9–0–0.

33. Survivor: Nicaragua (Season 21, 2010)

Split the tribes by age into Espada and La Flor, and introduced the Medallion of Power, an advantage a tribe could carry into a challenge. Winner: Jud "Fabio" Birza, 5–4–0.

34. Survivor: One World (Season 24, 2012)

Both starting tribes lived on a single beach before the merge. Winner: Kim Spradlin, 7–2–0.

35. Survivor: Island of the Idols (Season 39, 2019)

Stationed two previous winners on a separate island as mentors to visiting castaways. Winner: Tommy Sheehan, 8–2–0.

Where Survivor 51 fits

Survivor 51 is the next all-first-timer season: 21 new players, two tribes and the Open Era format, where any twist from the first fifty seasons can come back. The seasons at the top of this list share one thing: a cast that played to win from day one. We will know by the merge where Season 51 belongs.
