Mike opened Survivor 42 bonding with Jenny Kim on Vati, then found a Beware idol with Daniel Strunk and waited to activate it, a choice that cost him his vote. That missing vote helped doom Jenny, but Mike rebounded into a new trio with Lydia Meredith and Hai Giang and helped send Daniel packing.
After the tribes dissolved his social game took off. He formed a genuine friendship with Jonathan Young and joined the new majority, cutting Lydia and Chanelle Howell along the way. Omar Zaheer played on his guilt over Rocksroy Bailey's boot, persuading him that Hai saw him as a puppet, and Mike turned on Hai. Omar also helped him dodge Drea Wheeler's Knowledge is Power grab on his now-public idol. Mike passed on taking a shot at Omar, leaving Maryanne Oketch to own that blindside, then won fire against Jonathan. At Final Tribal he could not square his loyalty pitch with his betrayals, and only Jonathan voted for him as Maryanne took the other seven.
