Austin opened Panama on Viveros, the young men's tribe, and earned instant credit by winning flint in the first challenge. The Schoolyard Pick then shipped him to La Mina, where he slotted into an alliance with Terry Deitz and astronaut Dan Barry. He had a persuasive streak: he talked the tribe into cutting Ruth Marie Milliman over Sally Schumann, and when La Mina had to eat one of its own before the merge, he got Terry to turn on his friend Dan.
The merge was a math problem La Mina never solved. Austin tried downplaying himself in challenges to shed the target, then bonded with Danielle DiLorenzo during a miserable, rain-soaked exile. Terry saw an opening and offered his hidden idol to lure Danielle and Bruce Kanegai across, but Casaya held firm and Austin went to the jury, where he backed Aras Baskauskas for the win.
